Helping Children and Families Navigate Anxiety, Learning Challenges, and Big Emotions

I’m so glad you’re considering therapy for your child. I know it can be a difficult decision to reach out for help, but you don’t have to figure this out alone. As a parent, you are the expert on your child, and I’m here to support you every step of the way. Together, we’ll take the time to understand your child’s unique experience and work collaboratively to find strategies that will help them thrive emotionally and socially.

I’m Erin Olheiser, a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Registered Play Therapist (RPT), and Certified Professional Practitioner of Animal-Assisted Play Therapy (CPP-AAPT) through the International Institute of Animal Assisted Play Therapy (IIAAPT). With over 20 years of experience in the mental health field, I offer a holistic, strength-based approach to therapy that is tailored to the individual needs of each child and family.

My Approach to Therapy

My approach incorporates play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, exposure and response prevention, and animal-focused therapy to meet children and families where they are and to create a well-rounded therapeutic experience for children. I believe in working collaboratively with parents, educators, and other service providers to create a nurturing environment where your child can grow and heal.

I specialize in helping children with a range of challenges, including anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), autism spectrum disorders, selective mutism, tic disorders, and disruptive behavior disorders. By utilizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Animal-Assisted Play Therapy, I tailor my approach to what works best for your child.

Psychometric Testing Services

In addition to therapy, I also offer psychometric testing services to help identify and assess learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, and other developmental concerns. I believe in collaboration—working with you and your child’s teachers, healthcare providers, and other professionals to create a comprehensive plan for success.

Family-Centered Care

I understand that these challenges impact the entire family. That’s why I actively involve parents and caregivers in the therapy process, helping to create a holistic and supportive healing environment. Together, we’ll find the strategies that will not only help your child but also bring peace and balance to your family.

Whether through therapy, testing, or parent support, I’m here to help you and your child find a path forward. You don’t have to do this alone—let’s work together to help your child become confident, capable, and emotionally

Buster, Animal Assisted Play Therapy

Buster, Approved Animal Assisted Play Therapy® Dog

Celebrating Buster’s Retirement

After six wonderful years of service, Buster is officially retired! He’s now enjoying his well-earned days lounging on the couch, rolling in the yard, and continuing to support Busting Big Feelings through his Dear Buster letters.

Buster, the heart of our Pawsitive Play Therapy program, has spent years helping children feel safe, supported, and understood. With his happy tail wags, gentle licks, and impressive obedience skills, he brought comfort and confidence to so many kids.

Buster’s journey began when he was adopted at four months old through a Wisconsin rescue group. His first family, facing a significant illness, had to make the difficult decision to rehome him. Full of energy, Buster quickly settled into his new life and learned how to be a polite and loving Dober-Boy—though his excitement for playing with kids never faded!

As a working dog breed, Buster always needed a job, and he took his role as a therapy dog seriously. He proudly earned his Canine Good Citizen certificate and was approved as a play therapy animal through the International Institute of Animal Assisted Play Therapy.

Buster, thank you for six years of love, loyalty, and tail-wagging therapy. Enjoy your retirement—you’ve earned it! 🐾❤️

Special Note: A benefit of being part of a canine therapy team that uses Animal Assisted Play Therapy is that dogs do not have to be perfect. They are allowed to be dogs who sometimes lick, paw, and even bark because… well… that is what dogs do! They are working on and living with their own challenges, just like kids. They are also allowed to let us know if this is the work they want to do today, tomorrow, or years from now. When Buster is not in the office, he enjoys being our family pet!

We are happy to support your child with Pawsitive Play Therapy if it fits with your child’s personality and enjoyment of therapy, and it will help address the treatment goals identified within therapy.
